In the UK watchdogs TV programme “Rogue Traders” on the 14th October 2010 they featured a man called Clive Bramall, he runs a washing machine repair company in Oxfordshire.
Watchdog wanted to see what Clive Bramall was really like so they set up a fault with a Hotpoint Aquarius in a house. Washing machine expert Mike Brand allowed the Hotpoint machine to get half way through a wash cycle then he removed a plug at the back of the washing machine which disconnected the motor. He then put it all back together again.
As Clive Bramell entered the house with only a couple of screwdrivers he just stared blankly at the flashing lights. Many engineers that are not factory trained in repairs of washing machines and often suggest it’s the board as they don’t really know what they are doing! This also gives an amateur the opportunity to scare the customer in to a new machine by suggesting the board would make the repair too expensive.
To make a diagnosis of this kind you would only need to plug in to the board with a special diagnostic machine but many untrained engineers would not invest the money to purchase one.
